Alnico Magnets (Al-Ni-Co)

Alnico magnets are made primarily from aluminium, nickel, cobalt, copper, iron and sometimes titanium. They can be either cast or sintered.

 

Sintered Alnico

Sintered alnico is made from a powdered mixture of ingredients that are pressed into a die under tons of pressure, sintered in a hydrogen atmosphere and then cooled either within a magnetic field or without (anisotropic Vs Isotropic).


Cast Alnico

Cast Alnico melted and poured into a mold. Once solidified, the material is rough ground and then heat-treated and cooled, sometimes in a magnetic field. When treated in the presence of a magnetic field, the magnet is called anisotropic. This orients the material to take on maximum magnetization and allows a higher gauss level. A cast magnet that is not heat-treated in a magnetic field is called Isotropic. After heat treatment and cooling, the material can be ground to specific tolerances and then magnetized.


Attributes of both Cast and Sintered Alnico

  • Very temperature stable great for high heat applications
  • Maximum working temperature 525ºC - 550ºC
  • May be ground to size
  • Does not lend itself to conventional machining (Hard and Brittle)
  • High residual induction and energy product compared to Ferrite material
  • Low coercive force compared to Ferrite and rare earth materials (more subject to demagnetization)
  • Most common grades of Alnico are 5 and 8


Applications of Alnico Magnets


Magnetizing and Handling

Magnetizing is done after the magnet has been machined to the correct tolerances. Care should be taken when handling alnico material since it is brittle and chip or break if dropped on a hard surface. Also, because it has a low resistance to demagnetization, it will lose power if it is stored improperly (poles repelling each other). For best results, store magnetized alnico so that pieces are attracting each other, or with a steel keeper.

Magnetos, Separators, sensors, electron tubes, traveling wave tubes, radar, holding magnets, coin acceptors, clutches and bearings, motors, distributors, relays, controls, generators, receivers, telephones, microphones, bell ringers, guitar pickups, loudspeakers, security systems, cow magnets.


Machining

Alnico is a very hard and brittle material and does not lend itself to conventional machining. The STAR TRACE Employs Experienced Machinists and the proper equipment to grind alnico to its require Ship.

Ferrite Permanent Magnets

Ferrite Magnets are composed of strontium carbonate and iron oxide. They are charcoal gray in color and usually appear in the forms of discs, rings, blocks, cylinders, and sometimes arcs for motors.

 

Manufacturing Ferrite Magnets

A powdered mixture of strontium carbonate and iron oxide is injected into either a wet press or dry press for forming. During this pressing process, a magnetic field is applied in the direction of preferred magnetization to orient the material and increase the magnet's performance potential. This magnet is considered “oriented”. If not exposed to a magnetic field at time of formation, it is called “non-oriented” (Isotropic).

After the molding process, the material is then sintered at about 1010OC. This process is similar to that of kilting ferrite pottery, thus the popular name “Ferrite” magnet.

Lastly, the magnet is finish-ground to size with a diamond-bladed grinding wheel, magnetized, and inspected for shipment.

Tolerances

Pressed dimensions are either +/- 2% or +/- 0.5mm whichever is greater. Cut dimension are either +/- 3% or +/-0.5mm, whichever is greater. Thickness tolerances are normally ground to +/- 0.1mm.

Visual imperfections such as cracks, porosity, voids, surface finish, etc., (commonly found in sintered ceramic magnets) do not constitute cause for rejection.


Machining

Since ferrite material is so brittle, it requires special machining techniques and equipments. We are fully equipped to cut and grind ceramic material to your specifications.


Magnetizing and Handling

Ferrite magnet material is extremely brittle and can chip or break if dropped on a hard surface, or if allowed to “Jump at” an attracting object. Handle with care.

The weakest grade of Ceramic material is grade 1, which is typically non-oriented. Grades 5 and 8 are oriented ceramic material. Grade 8 is the strongest ceramic magnet material available (Refer to properties chart below).

When making magnetic assemblies with ferrite it is typically easier for production purposes to magnetize the product after assembly.

Flexible Magnets

The material goes through a calendering process and is formed into sheeting or strip. It can then be easily machined to size and magnetized. High-energy flexible magnet are anisotropic (oriented), whereas the regular flexible material is not.

Therefore, high-energy magnets are limited to magnetization through the Thickness, and are similar in strength to a Grade 1 ceramic magnet.

STAR TRACE Load Lifting Magnets are of robust cast and bolted or fabricated construction designed for handling Solid Slabs, Steel Ingots, Bloom Billets. Pig Iron, Light finished parts, Scrap and gives Maximum reliable, efficient and economical performance in the most arduous service condition.

CIRCULAR HEAVY DUTY MAGNETS

Shells of Star Trace Lifting Magnets are made from high permeability Steel Casting as per IS: 449 (BSS- 1617), properly machined, to provide the most efficient Magnetic Circuit. The periphery of the magnet is heavily ribbed to give added mechanical strength and an increased radiation surface to aid cooling. Center & Outer Poles are machined from high permeability Magnet Steel with Cored recesses arrangement to protect heads of through tensile bolts. The faces of poles from spigot joints in Magnet shell , the outer poles of larger Magnets are skirted for added protection. The pole shoes are easily replaceable.

TERMINAL BOX is designed to ensure protection whilst in operation and are of double entry type enabling the leads from the coils to be sealed in a separate cavity. The outside cable is brought through a gland into this second compartment ensuring no possibility of moisture entering the windings.


MAGNETIZING COILS for magnet size up to 900 mm dia is pure annealed wire wound and above these are strip wound. The glass insulation of class H standard with Fibreglass NOMEX tape forming an interlayer makes coil withstand high temperature.


BUMPING PLATES are of high grade Manganese Steel Casting as per IS - 276 with heavy ribs for added strength. These are clamped in position by the center and outer poles offering complete protection to the coil. The magnets are suspended with three legged STRING CHAINS made of best quality forged steel terminating in a forged ring. A two core cable is provided for connection with the supply and suitable Insulated plug and socket ensure easy operation.

Application

Magnetic filter are suitable for cylindrical, centreless, surface & internal grinding machines, thread grinders, honing machines, rolling mills etc. , it is also used as a pre-filter alongwith other types of coolant filters like paper band or hydro cyclone filters. Construction & working principle

Magnetic filter consists of powerful magnetic drum driven by double reduction worm geared motor. The contaminated coolant from the machine is passed is through the gap between the drum and the body. The dust particles are attracted by the drum and a rubber roller squeezes the swarf which is scrapped off by a scrapper plate. The clean coolant is collected is the coolant tank for recirculation to the machine.

Electro Permanent Magnetic Chuck combines the clamping Force of high

The switching On/Off of the chuck is done by means of Illuminated push-buttons.The Power consumption is considerably reduced saving almost 98% of precious energy, as only a current pulse for few seconds is required to switch the chuck On and Off. Hence the running and maintenance cost of the Electro Permanent Magnetic chucks are virtually nonexistant. When in operation the chuck is entirely isolated & independent of power supply. Ideal for ferrous tramp metal separation in gravity systems Star Trace Hump Magnets separators are adaptable to either round pipe or rectangular chute transfer lines.

Employing two heavy duty diverter equipped Spout Magnets positioned so that product flowing through the hump is forced into the magnetic fields. Star Trace humps take advantage of the offset flow of the material and insure maximum tramp metal removal from the product flow.

The hinged magnets are gasketed and clamped tightly to the hump housing for maximum product and dust containment, during processing operation. They swing open for removal of captured tramp metal.

Hinged steel belt chip conveyor
It has been specially designed keeping in mind the hazards that are normally encountered with conventional chips and swaft conveyors. The hinged steel belt is pressed in extra heavy duty sheet and perfect guiding of rollers ensures minimum friction and noise free operation: the body compact in size and occupies small space but due to extra chip space can handle large volume of chips. The continuous operation ensures least machine down time and minimum labour.

Magnetic plan sheet type conveyor

fine, light and sharp chips generated from gear shaves, gear hobbers, spline cutting machines, spm's, deep hole drilling machines, broaching machines, press shops and heat treatment shops. Coming with large amount of coolant tend to escape with the coolant and cause damage to the pump and effects surface finish. Plain sheet magnetic conveyors help attract ferrous chips from coolant and separates coolant from chips. Thus the coolant is free from chips and the conveyor acts as magnetic filter for the coolant.

The moving permanent magnets mounted on endless chain underneath the stationery stainless steel sheet attracts ferrous chips and slide them on plate to the discharge end. The coolant separated from chips flows to the coolant tank through an over flow so that even floating chips get attracted by moving magnets and get conveyed.


Magnetic plain sheet type conveyors being sleek in construction can be introduced into small cross sectional openings in machine tools. Since conveyors are custom built, different configuration and profiles can be made to suit specific applications.

These are high powered Electro Magnetic Vibration Chute Separator mostly used for treating fine and dry materials where iron could not be extracted by other Magnetic separators and need a very fine Magnetic feed for free flow where iron percentage is not more than 2%. This is complete with Structure, Hopper, Vibrating

This is complete with Structure, Hopper, Vibrating Tray with feed regulation and Cascade type Magnetic Pole Plates having peak Magnetic field on the Top of Pole and under each pole there is a pocket into which iron particules are drawn and these separators are capable to extract even the finest iron particles as they pass over a series of Magnetic Poles of Alternate field.
The materials are feed by hopper and an Electro Magnetic Vibrating Tray carries it and discharges over the Magnetic Cascade Poles where materials fall down leaving behind the iron particies trapped in the pole pocket. The Delivery end is equipped with collapsible bridge which shuts off when current fails and avoid mixing of materials.

 

Rotary Motorised Magnetic Grids


Rotary Motorised Magnetic Grids has SS Magnet Tubes on a circular arrangement held in place by two stainless steel end plates, a Speed Reduction Gear Motor and Starter. This is ideal for material that do not flow easily and obstruct flow in plain Grid.Rotary Grid is recommended for Sticky Diary products, pulverized minerals and ceramics, fibrous substances, Lino and fine cohesive materials such as magnesium oxide, zircon powder, fly ash,. alumina, gypsum, lime, powder sugar, cornstarch and flour. The rotary action not only prevents materials from briding, but it improves magnetic separation by agitaing cohesive powders.
It is manufactured as independent unit with Rare Earth Ndfeb Magnets in 25 mm Dia Tube. These are manufactured with manual and easy clean design. Sizes manufactured 300 x 300mm - 15 M3/hr. 400 x 400mm - 25 M3/hr.

Overband Magnetic Separators

In many branches of industry STAR TRACE Overband magnetic separators and suspension magnets have become indispensable for decades. They are used for removing magnetic parts from non-magnetic materials in order to project crushers, mills, processing plants etc. against too much wear and damage. They serve for cleaning non-magnetic bulk goods with iron contamination, for instance cleaning of foundry sand, coal and the like. They are used for recovering magnetic material from ore, steel mill slag etc.

 

Generally, overband magnetic separators and suspension magnets are installed above conveyor belts, vibratory feeders or chutes. They pick up ferrous metal parts from the bulk goods. In most cases, the magnets can also be installed in an existing installation without much expense.

 

When using overband magnetic separators and suspension magnets, many factors must be considered for the various applications, and it is impossible to list them all in a brochure. Each application, each material and each kind of conveying involves different problems.

 

Owing to the shape (demagnetization factor), long, bar-shaped and large iron parts can be better separated than short, cube shaped bulbous and small iron parts. he efficiency of the overband magnetic separator or suspension magnet depends on the pole size, pole distance, field intensity in the conveyor burden, lines of the material to be separated.

Large burden depths, large lump sizes, sticky or humid material render the separation more difficult.


RECTANGULAR SUSPENDED MAGNETS

Star Trace has been using space age technology to design the performance of their Suspended Magnets over any belt conveyor, vibratory feeder or inclined chutes. Ideally suited for removing tramp iron in quantities where continually discharging magnetic separators are necessary. Iron is extracted against gravity from the flow of material and held firmly to the magnet face until the magnet is de-energised. The best position for installation is it an angel over the conveyor head pulley or at the discharge point of a feeder, where the material fans out and is loose. In this position the magnet will remove more iron belt speeds (Fig. 1) looking at it costwise, this installation provides the best tramp iron removal for the money invested. Other installations have been made with the magnet suspended parallel to and above the conveyer. In such applications it is necessary to use a stronger magnet because tramp iron must be pulled through a fairly stable bed of material. Cleaning is simple-the operator just swings the magnet away from the conveyor, turns off the current and the tramp iron drops free.


IN-LINE AND CROSS-BELT MAGNETIC SEPARATORS

The In Line or cross belt magnetic separators provide a continuous and automatic discharge of collected tramp iron. A cleated belt revolves around stationery rectangular electro magnet suspended over the belt. Any iron coming on the conveyor is attracted by the magnet and discharged automatically by the cleated. Rubber canvas belt having its own independent drive. This is especially desirable where the magnet removes large quantities of tramp iron and hence never requires cleaning or stopping of the main conveyor.

The in-line suspended separator automatically discharge tramp iron in the same direction as the conveyor travels (Fig. 2) installed at an angle over the material discharge, and has the added advantages of removing long pieces of iron such as rods. Since the self cleaning belt of the in-line separator that can safely handle of jamming and tearing up a long section of expensive conveyor belting.

The cross-belt magnetic separator (Fig. 3) automatically discharges removed iron at right angles to the main conveyor and can be installed anywhere and in some cases over the material discharge.

Magnetic Pumps

The STAR TRACE magnetically coupled pumps are centrifugal types of fully encapsulated construction. The pumps are rated for continuous duty and is ideally suited for recirculation applications. The unit can be used with mild acids or alkalis, since the only components in contact with the pumped fluid are plastic and ceramic with a rulon bearing and a viton O- ring. (see Chemical compatibility.) Magnetically coupled pumps offer a number of advantages over conventional centrifugal pumps type.

» Leak paths are eliminated and friction and power consumption are reduced as there are no rotating seals.

» All 'wetted' components are formed from advanced plastic materials and have a high resistance to aggressive fluids.

» Transmission of heat from the pumped fluid to the motor is reduced.


INSTALLATION

The pump can be connected to pipework using suitable BSP fittings such as jubilee clips. The pump mounting plates have several fixing option. Flexible hoses with different internal diameters may be used (avoid over tightening as this may cause damage to the ports). The pump and pipework should be adequately supported and correctly fitted to avoid shock loading and strain on the pump and its ports. The pump not be mounted vertically with the ports below the motor.

OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE

The pump should have flooded suction since it does not self prime. Filters or restrictions should not be situated before the pump inlet. When priming, operate the pump in short 10 second cycles to facilitate the clearing of air. Ensure that there are no leaks or blockages in the associated pipework. The pump should not be operated against a closed valve for longer than 30 seconds. Where the pumped fluid causes coating or deposition, periodic cleaning of pumping internals may be necessary. This can be achieved by flushing through with an appropriate cleaning agent. The pump casing should be adequately ventilated to avoid overheating the motor. The motor is protected by the magnetic coupling should the impeller stall. do not run the pump dry.

Round and square magnetic tubes

Individual Star Trace magnetics tubes in either round or square styles are available for customers desiring to fabricate their own systems for special applications requiring non-standard spacing or tube arrangement. Ruggedly constructed from 304 stainless steel, Both styles have tapped mounting holes at each end for easy installation.

The one inch diameter round tubes have 1/4"-20 mounting holes and the one half inch ceramic square tubes have 3/8"-16 mounting holes. Standard tube sizes range from 4" to 48" long.

Grates

Material consistency and compactability which influence flow characteristics are important factors in grate magnet applications. Awareness of material with tendencies to bridge between the magnet tubes is necessary for positive flow.

Diverter systems are helpful in directing the material to the magnets, but diverters can tend to increase bridging and reduce uniform flow. It is important that material have a natural product flow.

Round Tube Type

Magnetic grates deliver ferrous tramp metal separation in bins, chutes, drawers, hoppers and circular enclosures. Star Trace grates are constructed with one inch diameter magnetic tubes placed on two inch (2) centers in heavy duty 1/8" thick 2" wide 304 stainless steel framing.

The round magnetic grates are available in 30 standard diameters from 4 inches through 36 inches. Special sizes are also available. Each of these round grates can be equipped with diverters. The high strength magnet material used in Star Trace grates has an approximate magnetic loss of 1/2 of 1 percent per year.

Square Tube Type

Square tube magnet separation grates are ideal for heavy duty applications where high product volume is involved. Having strong magnetic fields, the square tubes are installed with the leading edge toward the material flow.

This positioning helps eliminate material bridging and provides a protected collecting area along the bottom of the magnet where ferrous tramp metal remains out of the material flow. Constructed from 304 stainless steel, and mounted in a 1/4: thick x 2-1/2" high stainless steel bar framing, Star Trace square tube magnet grates deliver heavy duty performance and long service life. High Intensity, High Gradient Magnetic Roll Separator

STAR TRACE was the first to introduce indigenous High Intensity, High Gradient Magnetic Roll Separator for use of dry material in Indian Market. It is capable of separating a wide variety of materials from different industries in an efficient and economical manner. It has operated successfully since 1982 in numerous production application in various countries. STAR TRACE uses high energy Rare Earth Neodymium Permanent Magnets assembled in a proprietary configuration to generate forces of magnetic attraction, which can be used for processing any material from ferromagnetic to weakly paramagnetic. The exceptionally high magnetic gradient achieved by the unique STAR TRACE design results in extremely large separation forces, exceeding those of any electromagnetic induced Roll Separators. STAR TRACE incorporates improved design features resulting from an ongoing product development philosophy combined with extensive operational experience.

OPERATING PRINCIPLE
:
A short special fabric conveyor belt envelopes the magnetic roll and a tensioning idle roll which was driven by a motor. A feeder discharges material on the belt on continuous controlled rate of flow at uniform layer thickness. The ferromagnetic and para magnetic particles adhere to the belt while the non magnetic particles flow freely off the end of the conveyor. The division of para magnetic and non magnetic can be adjusted by using a splitter plate located below the belt. It can be configured stacked in any no of passes to suit the user requirement.

APPLICATION:
The open design of the Star Trace allows both coarse and very weakly magnetic materials to be treated successfully. Proven dry process application include material from 75 microns up to 100 mm (4 inch) particle size, at through puts from 200 kgs to 60 TPH ( depending on size)

Cage Style “T” Traps

T-Trap Magnetic separators are designed for heavy duty, large volume liquid and semi-liquid line flow systems. The T-Trap employs a slip-in cage of stainless steel permanent magnetic tubes, which capture ferrous tramp metal particles and improve the purity of the product. As the particles collect, they migrate to the rear of the tubes where they remain protected from wash-off until the tubes are cleaned.

With its’ top access bolt-on steel plate and seal, the T-Trap is easy to clean. Simply remove the top, lift out the magnet
cage, wipe clean and reinstall.

Available in 7 standard line sizes from 2” to 18” inches in
diameter, STR T-Trap’s can also be produced to meet special
applications.

Plate Style “T” Traps

When tramp metal protection is required for liquid lines carrying viscous to fibrous products, the plate style T-Trap is ideal. This magnet allows the product to flow through the housing without causing product bridging. An interior baffle is used to direct the entire product flow towards the powerful plate magnet, ensuring that tramp metal is forced into the magnetic field. Installation of the plate style magnet can be in any position. Vertical position eliminates the sump area, and in horizontal lines, cleaning is made easier when the magnet element is installed on top. Available in standard line sizes of 2” and 3” diameters. Water, as obtained naturally, has one major problem i.e. tendency to form scales on the pipes or other areas in which it is circulation especially when hot.


This scale formation results in:

1. Chocking of passage resulting in less flow and consequently consumption of more energy

It Works By

It is based on a process which treats water without altering its mineral composition. Water flows through a magnetic coil from highly efficient permanent magnets. In this cell the water crosses a magnetic field perpendicular to the lines of induction. This contact polarizes the molecules contained in the water, thereby disrupting the normal crystallization process of mineral salts such as calcium and magnesium. Once these salts have been physically modified in this way, they lose their ability to attach themselves to the lining of pipes and tanks.


Operating Principle

Molecules (CaCo3, Potassium, Manganese, etc.) which are in natural suspension in water, tend to form macro molecules which, if nothing is done, continue to coagulate, causing scale to collect in the pipes with resultant reduction in flow and increased consumption of energy.


Technical Principles

Permanent magnets are installed along the entire length of the appliance, the lines of magnetic flux being captured by a mild iron cylinder (care being taken that the flow-rate is not affected.)


What Is The Result?

When passing through the magnetic field, the macro-molecules are polarized in such a way that their conglomerate structure is deliberately disorganized so that their original molecular state of natural suspension in the water is re-established. After passing through this induced field, they will retain a residual magnetic charge for more than 30 hours (which is substantially longer than the water renewal cycle, which does not exceed 12 hours); they cannot therefore recoagulate. In the case of ferruginous water, ferrous and ferric welding residues, an anti-corrosion process is established (thus eliminating electrolysis phenomena).

Round and Square Magnetic Tubes

Individual Star Trace magnetics tubes in either round or square styles are available for customers desiring to fabricate their own systems for special applications requiring non-standard spacing or tube arrangement. Ruggedly constructed from 304 stainless steel, Both styles have tapped mounting holes at each end for easy installation.


The one inch diameter round tubes have 1/4"-20 mounting holes and the one half inch ceramic square tubes have 3/8"-16 mounting holes. Standard tube sizes range from 4" to 48" long.

Grates

Material consistency and compactability which influence flow characteristics are important factors in grate magnet applications. Awareness of material with tendencies to bridge between the magnet tubes is necessary for positive flow.

 

Diverter systems are helpful in directing the material to the magnets, but diverters can tend to increase bridging and reduce uniform flow. It is important that material have a natural product flow.

Round Tube Type

Magnetic grates deliver ferrous tramp metal separation in bins, chutes, drawers, hoppers and circular enclosures. Star Trace grates are constructed with one inch diameter magnetic tubes placed on two inch (2) centers in heavy duty 1/8" thick 2" wide 304 stainless steel framing.

The round magnetic grates are available in 30 standard diameters from 4 inches through 36 inches. Special sizes are also available. Each of these round grates can be equipped with diverters. The high strength magnet material used in Star Trace grates has an approximate magnetic loss of 1/2 of 1 percent per year.

Square Tube Type

Square tube magnet separation grates are ideal for heavy duty applications where high product volume is involved. Having strong magnetic fields, the square tubes are installed with the leading edge toward the material flow.

This positioning helps eliminate material bridging and provides a protected collecting area along the bottom of the magnet where ferrous tramp metal remains out of the material flow. Constructed from 304 stainless steel, and mounted in a 1/4: thick x 2-1/2" high stainless steel bar framing, Star Trace square tube magnet grates deliver heavy duty performance and long service life. Available in sixty-six standard square of rectangular sizes, these square tube grates are the optimum tramp metal separation device for point-of-entry receiving areas.
